If Anthony Kiedis had died of a heroin overdose in 1994, the Red Hot Chili Peppers would have become one of the greatest bands ever. Instead, they’ve made the same album several times since “One Hot Minute.”

I’ve not listened to any RHCP album other than Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which I believe is a masterpiece. No wait, I own Stadium Arcadium. Which shows you how memorable I found it.

I like the chili peppers but I don’t listen to them often and you wont find any of their songs on my spotify. However, I’ve been to a lot of concerts and RCHP was one of my top 5. They’re amazing live

I liked Californication when it was new, and I guess I still do somewhat. Everything since has been forgettable.

I’d say Californication was their last original attempt. It set the pace for those other albums nobody cares about but at least did have some originality to it

I had to look up what those albums were.

And that fact makes them not one of the greatest bands ever how?

As put by Adam Scott’s character on Parks & Rec, the Red Hot Chili Peppers music covers “everything from the culture of Southern California to... drug use in Southern California”

Since you’re already being harsh on the guy, you could have made the same statement by saying “if he’d left the band” instead of a hypothetical O.D. They definitely did their best work with Hillel Slovak (who did die young) and then with John Frusciante (who nearly did). It could be argued that Kiedis and Flea were (and are) good enough friends that if both Slovak and Kiedis had died, Flea wouldn’t have gone on without them.
The original drummer, Jack Irons “was unable to cope with Slovak’s death and subsequently quit the band, saying that he did not want to be part of something that resulted in the death of his friend. Irons has suffered from severe depression since Slovak’s death”.

It is great - listening it to it again now. The albums with Slovak and Frusciante playing on them are far superior to the rest.

It’s one thing to follow a formula. It’s something else entirely to phone it in. RHCP has been doing that since 1995

Lots of good songs on that album.

Jeez, I feel old. I thought One Hot Minute was poppy (good overall, but poppy) compared to BloodSugarSexMagik, but that’s one of the greatest albums ever created. I haven’t really listened to any of the newer stuff because all the tunes from Californication that got radio play didn’t do anything for me. So I guess what I’m saying is, I agree with you.

I buy it. It’s the nirvana argument. Nevermind was brilliant (as was blood sugar sex magic), but in utero was good but unspectacular. But when the sample size is that small, is easy to extrapolate greatness, when the likely reality is much different. Same case could be made for pearl jam if they disappeared after vitalogy.

Stadium Arcadium would be great off the back of Dani California and Snow alone, but there’s so much more to it than that. I consider it my favourite RHCP album, even though most of my very favourite RHCP tracks come from Blood Sugar Sex Magic, ‘cause listening to Arcadium is what got me into the band in the first place.

I need to give it another listen.

They are not the only band to do this. Creative vapor lock? Lazy? Unable to hear themselves or demands by producers/label company?

Californication is my favourite RHCP album - it’s one of the few complete albums (of any artist I like) which I can listen all the way through and really enjoy the experience. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is obviously a great classic as well, but Californication is my preference.

I maintain that In Utero was a better Pixies album than the Pixies made. It didn’t have the visceral sort of punch that Nevermind did, but any sophomore major label album is going to have a lot to live up to. Seriously, who still remembers Vs. for anything other than “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter...”
Ten had been out for a few months when Nevermind hit - and when it hit, it seemed to turn hard rock upside down. Geffen was a genius with mixing and marketing. Every time rock and roll gets too full of itself, something comes along to burst into the public consciousness and tear down the idols. Punk Rock came along on the trailing edge of bands like Led Zeppelin; Grunge came along as hair metal had reached critical mass. I don’t know what’ll happen next but it’s a few years overdue.

Counterpoint (full disclosure - I love this song):

I agree with most of that, but I think you’re underrating Vs. Daughter had a ton of airplay, and rear view mirror was a great song. The whole album and tour was undermined by that ticket master dispute.

Frankly I think they’re overrated period. I like a handful of their songs, but never enough to buy an album. I respect their journey and Anthony Kiedis' story, but its not for me.

When it comes to marketing Geffen didn’t do much in the way of Nevermind. They were completely blindsided by the album’s success and didn’t even have a marketing model that could keep pace with it. They called it their “duck and get out of the way” album, because that’s all they could think of to do.
